Michelle Slater

I’m Michelle and I work for Stepping Stones DS providing administration support.  I coordinate the school outreach service and therapy groups, manage training bookings and am also the bookkeeper.

I have a background both in management and in the educational arena.  I am qualified as a BTec Nursery Nurse and worked for many years in a primary school as a Key Stage One Learning Support Assistant.  Whilst working as an LSA I completed a Professional & Continuing Education course in Teaching Special Needs at Portsmouth University.  The course looked at strategies for supporting learner’s individual needs, understanding the range of special educational needs and disabilities, investigating theories of learning and understanding their use to support learning.  It also explored assessment and its impact on learning, plus the social and emotional needs of students.

I later changed career path and went on to work in the business world.  My most recent position before joining the Stepping Stones team was as a General Manager.  I was responsible for the recruiting, training and management of a large team of staff within the wholesale and retail industry.

I am now very happy to be back in the education and services arena.  In addition to working for Stepping Stones DS, I also support another local Down syndrome charity undertaking a very similar role.  Opportunities to work for both charities arose through my current administration role with LETS Go UK, who provide a range of services developed to support children, families and professionals covering a variety of speech, language and developmental needs.

I am delighted to be able to use both my management and educational experience in my role with Stepping Stones DS.  I love being part of the Stepping Stones team and am very proud to work for a charity who provide such an invaluable service to its members.

Away from work, I am a very keen sailor and skier.  I enjoy long walks with my two Jack Russells and spending time with my friends and family.
